Rook and Rebel

By Kate Crew

You know those Wattpad romance novels you read until 5am on summer nights when you were 13? This is that.

The Ugly Truth:

You know, I brought this on myself but yet am still surprised with how angry I am at myself for wasting a day reading this. Kate crew’s Rook & Rebel was BookTok’s dream as it had some incredible lines and scenes every… 75 pages. The rest left me longing.

I am all for a biker gang romance, and I would even go so far as to say that I enjoyed the characters involved in our leading man’s crew, but that is about all I can say for our characters. Rook, while funny at times, confused me most of the book. At first, I literally thought it was an age-gap romance because of how tired and sore he was all the time. Once it was cleared up that this was from work and, ya know, the “incident,” I still struggled to see him as a mid-twenties man. Also, I could not, for my life, wrap my head around his “badass” nature. Him killing and torturing people did not make sense to me and I had to kind of just take those plot points with a grain of salt. I did, however, strongly enjoy him taking charge of Regan and spurring some fire into her – especially when it involved his bike (if you get what I mean).

Regan – girly pop – you are an idiot. There were very few redeeming qualities about Regan, and I only began to like her when she finally picked up a gun. Still, even then, it felt like zero to one hundred in an incredibly unrealistic way. But back to her being just dumb, who the heck just sits around as much as she does. I am sorry, but go to a yoga class??? Go for runs?? Make friends? She acted as though her father locked her in the house, yet every time he actually told her to stay home in the book, she managed to either leave or have people over, which begs the question of why the heck did you not just start your life? I understand the whole idea of taking care of a parent and being there for him, but the dude was clearly out and about, and she used that as an excuse to put her entire life on pause; I just could not get around it. Also, her scenes with Rook where she went after her were just silly and it made her feel like a true child.

Overall, I read this because I was on a six-hour plane ride, and this was the book I chose to download.
